THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING
For the ATFC auction in January, Ginny Whitener offered a baroque concert to be performed by Ginny and some of
her musician friends. This item caught the eye of music-loving member Elysia Iverson who, even though she was
unable to attend the auction, arranged for Jo to submit a winning bid. The next month Elysia's church held an
auction. With a musical group in her pocket, Elysia offered a baroque concert soiree for ten people at the country
home of a friend. It so happens that this friend, Reba Adams, owns a beautiful harpsichord which was hand built by
her husband Gail and which also just happens to be Ginny's instrument. Fellow musicians were Nancy Spencer and
Pat O'Scannell playing flute, recorder and viola da gamba. A lovely afternoon was had and Ginny's offer and Elysia's
contribution raised money for the ATFC auction and segued into another fundraiser for the Rogue Valley Unitarian
Universalist Fellowship. Very creative!

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES
ATFC lost a beloved member, Linda Sanders, on June 13th after a sudden illness. Our condolences go out to her
loved ones.
SECTIONALS
The day after Linda’s memorial service, the 3.0 senior women’s team of which she was a stand-out member, traveled
to play in Sectionals. It was an emotional journey for them all and though they didn’t advance to Nationals, we are,
indeed, proud of them. Also playing in the sectionals were the Women’s Super-Senior 7.0 & 8.0 teams!
Congratulations on a great year!!
BIG AL’S IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER!
It's that time of year again - Southern Oregon's biggest tennis tournament is coming up: July 17-19th. This is a great
opportunity for everyone at the Club to get involved: play tennis, volunteer at the courts, volunteer for the Saturday
night BBQ at the Club, and/or come to the BBQ. Come join in the fun! Registration forms for the tournament & the
BBQ and volunteer sign-up sheets are all at the Front Desk.
TENNIS IN NO TIME
Leo will be teaching an adult beginner class July 21 & 28 and
August 4 & 11. Cost is $60/series. This course is designed for people who are not yet ATFC tennis members. ATFC
fitness members are, of course, most welcome!! Tell your friends!
BREAKING NEWS!
ATFC is proud to be offering a three-day camp run by world-renowned tennis player, Dennis Ralston! The camp will
be held August 28, 29, and 30 here at the Club. You may participate in 1,2 or 3 days. Look for registration forms at
the Tennis Board.
TENNIS LIGHTING UPDATE
Great news!! After lots of research, proposals back and forth, negotiations with the City of Ashland and the State of
Oregon, joint meetings of the LLC Board and the ATFC Board, we now have a signed contract with Triphase Electric
Supply, LLC to install new lights on the tennis courts. This is a very exciting move for the Club, both environmentally
and fiscally. We are anticipating a savings in electricity of more than $12,000 annually. The LLC is lending the non-
profit money for the net cost of the project. (after a rebate from the city of Ashland and a Business Energy Tax
Credit from the State). While the total cost will be $61,000,we are anticipating the net cost to be approximately
$20,000. The loan will be paid back to the LLC over an 8-year period.

UNSUNG HERO
Thanks to Jody Hodges for donating a super-duper laundry spinner to ATFC. This is a machine that has to be seen
to be believed. Come ask for a demonstration! We are now able to cut the drying time of our many loads of laundry
in half. Thanks, Jody, for being on the Green Team and for contributing this amazing beast!
SPOTLIGHT ON FRONT DESK VOLUNTEERS
Each month we'll be introducing you to one of our great volunteers who greet you five days a week.
Ed Laskos is Mr. July. Ed is part of Team Laskos - he and wife Sharon cover the entire volunteer Wednesday
shift from 11-4 and they have two of the best welcoming smiles in the Club! Ed's a great husband, dad and tennis
player and he is someone who is generous with his help, who sees what needs to be done and does it. Whenever
there is a gathering or function at ATFC, he and Sharon always stay to help clean up.
For years he has given many hours of his time to Big Al’s and has been one of the main reasons for the tournament’
s success and fun!
Here are a few highlights from Ed's younger days: he won an award as the best 6th grade crossing guard back in
Wisconsin (word has it that there were hundreds in the competition). In 1976 he worked for ABC sports covering
both the Innsbruck and Montreal Olympics working as a studio cameraman! From 1975-1978, Ed was a player
coach in Austria for the team Turnershaft Innsbruck. Wow, Ed! His most memorable tennis moment was playing for
the 4.0 ATFC team in Nationals in 1992. (Check out the photo of the slightly younger Ed in the Club lobby.)
Ed’s Favorite movie: Four Weddings & A Funeral;
Favorite restaurant: Pasta Piatti. Favorite vacation: Honeymooning with his beautiful wife Sharon in Paris. (Sweet!)
