November 2009 ATFC Newsletter
November Promotion
Encourage your friends to join ATFC in November:   New members will receive a pound of Noble Coffee!

ATFC IS HONORED
We were so excited (and surprised) to receive the Ashland Chamber of Commerce "2009 Service Business of the
Year" Award at the Annual Dinner last week.  What a great honor.  Thanks to Katy Bazylewicz who gave a most
compelling introductory speech highlighting some of the many ways
ATFC serves the greater community.

Also receiving an award was Noble Coffee as “2009 Emerging Business of the Year.”  In addition, Leo Van Dijk was
named "Citizen of the Year."  Hooray and congratulations to our ATFC comrades!

ASK THE PROS & TRAINERS
This new Newsletter column gives you a chance to ask questions of our professional staff.  There's a question jar by
the Tennis Board.
Question:  If a returner calls a serve long (and doesn't play the ball), but then changes the call to "good",  is a let
played or is it the server's point?
Answer from Maestro Leo:  It is the server's point.   However, if the receiver returns the ball, a let is played.

MISS MARTINA MANNERSTILOVA
Dear MMM:  I am a new member of ATFC and am completely confused about Super Saturday.  Are we starting a
football team here?  That would be great as I was the starting point guard of my grammar school kick-the-can team
and I have heard there is a lot of crossover between the two sports.  Can you help me understand what this big
event is all about?

Love, Raring to Go

Dearest Raring:  Hold your horses, dear one.  Perhaps you should try pickleball!

Of course  I can help you with information about Super Saturday.  This is the Club's major fundraising event of the
year and it is not to be missed.   Cousin Arnold Shwarzenmanners and I tell all our celebrity friends about this great
evening of auction, food, drink, raffle, music and fun!!  There are so many ways to get involved:  1) donate a bottle
of wine for the raffle; 2) buy and sell raffle tickets; 3) donate an item to the auction and/or ask your local business
friends to contribute; 4) become a sponsor; 5) attend the auction and have a ball!  Date is January 30 and my good
friend, Totally Talented Tilly Gibbs, is in charge!

Wishing you the best - MMM

p.s. cheers to Tom Beam who, along with his wife, Lisa, is a Grand Slam Sponsor of Super Saturday!

NOVEMBER’S COUPLE
Tom and Carolyn Kennedy have a lot in common:  they both err on the side of generosity and neither likes to sit
still.  The survivors of "Lost" could only wish to have this duo on the island with them for there's almost nothing one
or both can't do.

Need a golf lesson?  Carolyn was Club Champion at Oak Knoll for 8 years; Insurance?  Tom was an agent for 40
years.  Hair design?  Carolyn's been at it since 1966. Cooking, banking, decorating, tennis & tiling are also in their
collective repertoires!

If you suffer from the "youngest child syndrome," don't whine to Carolyn:  she's the youngest of 11 kids with an
oldest sibling 27 years her senior!  When Tom & Carolyn aren't at the Club (Tom works out 6-7 days a week), they
enjoy working on their cabin at Hyatt Lake.  Favorite adventure?  They participated in the first Bike Oregon event,
successfully riding from Salem to Brookings.  In any spare time they are likely to be entertaining their two grandkids.
p.s.  Tom & Carolyn's son, Larry Scripter, and Tom rebuilt the benches in the Men's sauna.  We always like to
support those who support ATFC so if you need help with a building project - big or small - you can contact Larry at
301-1594.

POET’S CORNER
Slo Mo

It's a matter of perspective,
or as the Applebee's Restaurant sign said:
"How long a minute lasts
depends on which side of
the bathroom door you are on."

So as Martin smacked  his hard serve at me,
I tried to create
an "outside the bathroom door" perspective:

Focusing on the ball in his hand,
Focusing on the ball in the air,
Focusing on the ball leaving his racket,
Focusing on the ball heading towards me;

Slowing it down -
not from the perspective of a speedgun -
but from the perspective of my eyes
and body reaction time -
relaxing, responding, returning.
